Trolley Car Table Tennis Club ....new home?

Postby Nick on Fri Mar 26, 2010 9:01 pm

Please read the reply below for the latest news on relocating. Can you help?

The following is my original post from March:

Click here for Location via google maps with street view.
Hi Folks,
This is the news that all have been waiting for. The tables and barriers are now up and the club
is now open at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center which is located at 4842 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19129. The hours are listed below. A snail mailing was done for all local
USATT members from Ken Weinstein but all may not have received that mailing yet which explains the membership payment structure more in detail. There is a parking lot in front of the
building and upon entering you will be asked for the daily fee which I understand to be $ 5.00
per day. However, monthly and yearly memberships will be offered. The staff of the Arthur Ashe Center is collecting the playing fees. Once you're in the building, you have use of the entire facility which includes the weight/exercise room and locker rooms with showers, etc. There are
seven new Killer Spin tables and two older ones. In time, the club will have a pro shop which will be located in the same area as the tennis pro shop. The website for the table tennis club will be up in a few days. However, the website for the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center is as follows:
http://www.ashetennis.org/ . This site also lists holiday and other activities dates when the building will be closed.
Marvin

The hours are as follows:

7am - 11pm seven days a week

Best Playing Times:

Monday - Friday 6-10pm
Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm

In terms of supervision, we do not need someone to hang around the courts to supervise. There will always be someone at the front desk and other Arthur Ashe staff have agreed to keep an eye on the tables and the table tennis area. I know this is different from other clubs that you visit but this will work for us.

Thanks,

Ken

Re: Trolley Car Table Tennis Club NOW OPEN!

Hello all! I just got back from Trolley Car Table Tennis Club. I took the whole family, so we didn't want to stay too long. My wife and I were the only ones there at first, then people started filtering in. There were 6 of us when we left.

The club is set up at the end of a row of indoor tennis courts. There are lights directly over the area, but they were not turned on today. I'd say you have between 7 and 8 feet behind each side of the table. Six tables were set up in this area, three others were in a side area for the time being. There are two Killerspin Cyclones which are battle worn, and seven brand new Killerspin MyT9 (http://www.killerspin.com/products/indoor/myt9/364-01) tables.

If you do plan on visiting at times other than "the best times to play", I suggest you organize with a friend or two so you have someone to play.

The floor is not completely level, I was told that they do plan on leveling the area within the next month or so.

I took I-76 East from King of Prussia, exited at 340A City Line Ave. Keep left, following the signs to Ridge Ave, take a left at Ridge and the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center is almost immediately on the left.

Hi all,

I have disappointing news for Trolley Car Table Tennis Club members. Leadership at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center has asked us to leave by the end of September. A decision was made by leadership to no longer offer any adult activities or programs inside the Arthur Ashe building. This includes tennis open play, tennis lessons and yes, table tennis.

I hope you will join me for a meeting on Tuesday, August 17th, 7pm at nearby Trolley Car Cafe (3269 S. Ferry Road - 5 blocks south of Arthur Ashe) to discuss our next steps. We are allowed to bring the seven new Killerspin tables and other supplies (racquets, balls, barriers, etc.) to another nearby location. I have started to look for a replacement location but have not found one yet. Philadelphia University is unable to host our table tennis club but did offer to host future tournaments.

Please join me on 8/17 to discuss our options (Lutheran Theological Seminary in Mt. Airy, Spin Philly, other?). Bring your ideas and energy so we can hopefully turn a disappointing situation into an opportunity. In the meantime, Trolley Car Table Tennis Club will continue to be open for open play. Che

Thanks,
Ken
